How to Contribute to Molly's 3rd Issue
The third issue will be Molly's first themed issue. The theme started out as movies and music, but I've extended it to a general multimedia approach that includes television, print and new media as well.
Please email me at issue3[at]mollyzine[dot]net before sending your actual work.
I already have fantastic cover art that I'm excited to reveal when the time comes. Molly tends to be text-heavy, so I'm very much always on the look out for any kind of artwork to include inside as well.
For Issue 3, I'd also like to move beyond print and include a CD or DVD with work that can't be photocopied.
What I'm looking for:
- Personal and critical essays
- Opinion pieces
- Academic papers
- Short fiction
- Cartoons & drawings
- Photographs and photo essays
- Reviews of movies, books, television, music, gear, collectibles & events
- Interviews
- Multimedia expressions, such as short videos, audio tracks, hypertext works, etc.
- DIY movie and television commentaries (guidelines here)
Guidelines
- Submissions have to be in some way related to popular culture.
- Anything submitted must be original work. Found art is cool, but not for this zine. So, for example, it's okay to write about fan fiction, but don't send any actual fan fiction.
- There aren't specific guidelines for fiction except that quirky is good, but nothing so quirky that it's in love with itself.
- Reviews should have a personal bent. Tell a story about your relationship with what you're reviewing, not just whether or not it's any good.
- Check your work for grammar, spelling, etc. Presentation is important.
- Any academic papers must be fully cited. The citation style is the author's choice.
- When sending photographs and other artwork.
- Send a proposal (preferably by email) before sending your full work.
- Submissions are sent electronically unless other arrangements are worked out.
- Molly pays in copies - two per contributor. All contributors retain full rights to their work.
Some possible topics:
- Favorite movies and why we love them (not the best - favorites.)
- Adaptations from one medium to another (such as books to film, or the incomprehensible (to me) adaptations from films to stage musicals that keep popping up).
- Any kind meditation on any kind of music culture - mix tape culture, subgenres, clubbing etc.
The new deadline is June 30, 2007, though, by all means, please feel free to send in your work before that.
Issue 3 will be published in early October.
